NEW: Making a Handle for a Spear & Jackson Saw

You may have seen the Spear & Jackson traditional resharpenable series (9500R and 9515K). These saws are available in 22″ and 24″ with crosscut teeth (and sometimes you might find a 26″ also). They are very good value , the steel and filing are good, so it is worth it to upgrade with a better fitting handle. Why not make one yourself? This certainly can be a lot of fun.

Replacement handle for a cut down Spear and Jackson 9500R blade

After designing and making different handles for these saws over the last few years, like the saw above, we’ve set out to create a design that fits the Spear and Jackson blade’s shape right away. We have settled on the following design which you can download if you would like to make the handle.

Why make this handle?

This handle will greatly improve the sawing experience by giving you a comfortable snug fit. A good fit of the handle to your hand increases the feedback you get from the wood and as a result makes sawing straight easier.

Note: It will fit the blade directly using nuts and bolts with some minor adjustments. The holes in the blade are sized to the smaller diameter rivets used. These can be easily filed to fit with a round chainsaw file.

Secondly, due to differences between batches of saw blades, the holes may be slightly differently positioned. Again this can be made to fit by using the round chainsaw file. If the handle doesn’t quite reach the holes, the blade can be made a mm shorter at the back with a flat file to accommodate this. More on this in the articles on how to make a handle.
